What is

Somatic Psychotherapy

S

omatic Psychotherapy is a form of depth therapy that combines psychoanalytic thinking with somatic work. It was founded by psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich, who was among the first to recognize that a person’s psychological history is not exclusively expressed through words, but is also imprinted on the body. This approach was later evolved by theoretical and clinical successors, such as Ola Raknes, Alexander Lowen, Federico Navarro, Genovino Ferri, and others. Today, it is increasingly supported by contemporary research in psychology and neuroscience.
In Somatic Psychotherapy, the body holds an equal status with thought and emotion. Posture, breathing, muscular tension, and the functioning of the nervous system are vital sources for understanding our experience and the ways we relate to ourselves and others. Many of the difficulties we face in life are rooted in early experiences that were formed before we had the ability to express them verbally (preverbal experiences). For this reason, an exclusively verbal therapy can sometimes reach its limits.
Through working with the body and the nervous system, the therapeutic process can access these deeper levels of experience and activate the brain’s neuroplasticity, paving the way for profound and genuine change.

How does Somatic Psychotherapy work in practice?
While Somatic Psychotherapy utilizes various tools, the individualized therapeutic plan is primarily based on two central pillars:

CHARACTER ANALYSIS

Character Analysis constitutes the core of the Reichian approach. It posits that symptoms—such as anxiety, depressed mood, or relationship difficulties—are not isolated phenomena, but rather expressions of a deeper structure: the character.
The character is understood as an organized set of somatopsychic patterns shaped during the individual's developmental journey. It encompasses defense mechanisms, emotional regulation strategies, ways of relating to others, as well as specific physical postures and patterns of muscular tension. A fundamental element of Reichian theory is armoring (character and muscular armor): the muscular tensions and physical postures that function as a protective mechanism against emotional pain or trauma, but simultaneously restrict the natural flow of energy and the individual's authentic expression.
The therapeutic process of Character Analysis does not aim solely at alleviating a symptom, but at the gradual differentiation and reorganization of this structure. Through combined verbal and somatic processing, the client gains awareness of their fixed patterns, releases restrictive armoring, and develops greater flexibility in the functioning and expression of their energy.

VEGETOTHERAPY

Vegetotherapy is a unique tool in Somatic Psychotherapy, based on the principle that repressed emotions and psychological traumas do not remain solely in the mind. Instead, they are "stored" in the body, creating chronic muscular tensions—the so-called "armor". Through targeted somatic techniques and activations (actings), it works directly upon the autonomic nervous system. This helps, where necessary, to soften this muscular armor and, by extension, gradually modify the corresponding character traits that prevent the individual from living a fulfilling life.
The selection of techniques and somatic activations is highly individualized, depending on the nature of the blockage and the developmental phase to which it is attributed. This ensures that the appropriate bodily level is targeted for a safe and effective organization of the self. This specialized process allows for the restoration of the natural energy flow, enhances neuroplasticity, and contributes to the individual's reconnection with their authentic self.

As in every psychotherapeutic approach, Somatic Psychotherapy strictly adheres to the principles of the therapeutic relationship, confidentiality, and safety. The process is deeply rooted in trust, creating a secure framework for exploration, understanding, and meaningful change.
